Momentum - Hack from Ironsworn

So a while back I've played a few games of Ironsworn. If you haven't played it, it's a game of quest-driven characters seeing their stories unfold in a perilous land . Nothing grand about the setting, but I did like some of its subsystems and the way it frames usual gaming constants like initiative and supply. But for now I'd like to toy with its momentum subsystem, which is a core part of the game. It gives the play a heroic and dramatic feel: accumulated successes lead to point where you can grab control a crucial moment in your journey. At the same time, continuous failures will make your usual strong moments a bit more risky. It won't make the game swingy, like how usual meta-currency subsystems work. So I tried converting it for d20 games. Usable in D&D 5E, D&D 4E, Knave, or any d20 game that has a roll over DC/TN resolution system. - - - image from Ironsworn book. used without permission Momentum Score Momentum is a mechanic that repres...

1d20 Factions in Tropical Archipelagos/Seas

On the OSR discord channel, there is a d20-democracy channel. Basically, a person can pitch in a topic or idea for a random table, and people will help filling it up. Here's one of my pitched ideas, posting it here for posterity. Thanks to the following people in helping making it. Scabbard of the Fallen Abomination

Back in 2017, one of our homebrew rpg groups had a homebrew challenge. One of those is creating a weird magic, which can be a spell, effect, or an item, that is 5E compatible. This was my entry back then, but I expanded on it a bit, adding agenda and fear. Posting it here for posterity, and possibly improving it to be a system-neutral item/loot. - - - Image: my rendition of the scabbard's appearance   Image: a transformed sword, becoming a sentient arm Inspiration: Morty's Giant Arm (Rick and Morty s03e02) + Tentacle Swords. SCABBARD OF THE FALLEN ABOMINATION Wondrous item, rare (requires attunement) An old scabbard made from wrinkly leather. This scabbard can shrink or enlarge to accommodate any knife, dagger, sword, or similar weapon up to and including a greatsword. With a command word, any sheathed weapon drawn from this scabbard turns its blade into a long and deceptively scrawny arm attached to a hilt of a greatsword. The "arm" blade's ...

OSR Guide for the Perplexed - Introduction

I have been posting about my games in my personal social media account. Well, not consistently. But I wanted to post it in a better format other than what the platform had to offer. So, I decided to make a channel to spout out my rpg system ramblings and burp out my great and not-so-great experiences under different tables. I was not entirely sure about what my first post will be about, so I will just kick start things by answering a running questionnaire for OSR enthusiasts. I call myself an OSR enthusiast, because I haven’t really gotten down and ran actual old school D&D (OD&D, B/X, etc) but am leaning to the old school spirit of gaming.  I am over a month late when this got a bit of hype when posted on reddit, but I'd just like to make my own version as my first post here.  One article or blog entry that exemplifies the best of the Old School Renaissance for me: This great sneak peek from Chris McDowall’s upcoming new book, Electric Bastionland. http...
